Sometimes, a business starts with something as simple as missing a really good drink.
For the two sisters behind monmon.sg, it started after a trip to Vietnam. They came home still thinking about a matcha they had there, but couldn’t find anything quite like it in Singapore. So they decided to try making it themselves at home.
What started as an attempt to recreate a favourite drink slowly became something more.
At the time, one of the sisters was going through a difficult period in her career and was looking for something that felt meaningful. Making drinks became a creative outlet, something the sisters could enjoy, experiment with and build together. With every recipe they tried, they became more confident and curious about where Mon Mon could lead.
Of course, it wasn’t always easy.
There were months of testing, tweaking and plenty of failed recipes. Some drinks took countless attempts before they were happy with them. Some will never be seen on their menu. Having each other made the process easier. They could share ideas, taste-test together and encourage each other whenever something didn’t work.
That mindset is still a big part of monmon.sg today.
They make some of their syrups from scratch and take the time to refine every drink before putting it on the menu. Their coffee is also brewed using a moka pot. What started as a more affordable and practical option eventually became something they genuinely loved, and it has become part of what makes Mon Mon unique.
One of their favourite memories came from a simple coincidence.
A couple once placed two separate orders just fifteen minutes apart, each trying to surprise the other. Neither knew what the other had planned. It was a small moment, but it reminded the sisters that their drinks could be part of people’s special moments too.
For them, it’s not always about making another sale. Sometimes, making someone’s day a little happier is enough.
Mon Mon has also given the sisters something they didn’t expect, more time together. With one of them eventually preparing to move out and start a new chapter, building this business side by side has given them a reason to spend more time together, create together and share moments they may not always get in the future.
In that sense, Mon Mon has become more than a business. It’s a chapter of their lives that they get to build together.
Today, the sisters run monmon.sg from their home kitchen in Yishun, serving thoughtfully made matcha, coffee and seasonal drinks in small batches.
They’re not looking to rush or grow just for the sake of growing. For now, they’re focused on making good drinks, trying new ideas and putting care into every cup.
Their next goal is to bring Mon Mon beyond their home through more pop-ups and food fairs, and hopefully share their drinks with more people across Singapore.
Because sometimes, a business doesn’t need to start with a big plan.
Sometimes, it starts with one unforgettable cup, two sisters, and the decision to give it a try.
